Khuri Sand Dunes Jaisalmer – Desert Safari & Camel Ride
Quiet golden dunes, a traditional desert village and a night under the stars, south-west of Jaisalmer.
Khuri Sand Dunes: the quieter side of the Thar
When people think of a desert safari in Jaisalmer, they usually think of Sam. But south-west of the city lies Khuri, a small desert village surrounded by rolling golden dunes, where the pace is slower, the crowds are thinner and the desert still feels open. For travellers who want camel rides, sunset and a night in the dunes without the rush, the Khuri Sand Dunes are one of the best places to go in Jaisalmer.
Khuri is more than a set of dunes. The village itself, with its round mud houses, thatched roofs and painted walls, gives you a look at how desert families have lived in the Thar for generations. Pair that with a camel ride across the dunes at golden hour, and you have one of the most rewarding desert experiences in Rajasthan.
Where is Khuri and how to get there
Khuri lies roughly 45 to 50 km south-west of Jaisalmer city, about an hour's drive on a quiet desert road. The route passes small villages, open scrubland and, for many guests, a stop at Kuldhara, the abandoned village, on the way.
- From Jaisalmer city: around 1 hour by car.
- From Jaisalmer railway station or bus stand: we can pick you up directly.
- Getting around: jeep transfer to the dunes, then camel or walking trek into the sand.
Our team arranges pickup and drop, so you do not need to plan transport yourself. See our car rental in Jaisalmer if you want a vehicle for the whole trip.
Khuri vs Sam Sand Dunes
Both are beautiful, and both are worth seeing. The difference is in the experience.
| Khuri Sand Dunes | Sam Sand Dunes |
| Distance from Jaisalmer | About 45–50 km south-west | About 40 km west |
| Crowd level | Quieter, fewer tourists | Busier, especially at sunset |
| Village life | Traditional mud-house village | Mostly camps and tourist stops |
| Best for | Peace, couples, families, photography | First-time visitors, large groups |
| Night sky | Darker, clearer stars | More camp lights |
If you want a calm sunset and a real feel of the desert, choose Khuri. If you only have a few hours and want the most famous dunes, Sam is closer. Many guests ask us to plan a route that avoids both crowds completely. Read about our private and non-touristic desert safari.
What to do at Khuri Sand Dunes
Camel safari across the dunes
The heart of any Khuri visit is the camel ride. You ride out across the dunes in the late afternoon, guided by camel men who have spent their lives with these animals. First-time riders are helped at every step. Rides can be short sunset trips or longer treks that last through the evening and into the next morning.
Sunset on the dunes
As the sun drops, the dunes turn from gold to orange to deep red. At Khuri you can usually find a ridge to yourself, so your sunset photos have sand and sky, not other people.
Khuri village walk
Walk through the village to see the round mud houses, the hand-painted walls and daily desert life: water being carried, animals being herded and chai being brewed outside homes.
Rajasthani dinner and folk music
Evenings end with a traditional Rajasthani dinner, chai and pakoras around a fire, and folk songs from the desert. Vegetarian food is standard, and non-vegetarian food can be arranged in advance.
A night under the stars
With fewer lights around, the sky above Khuri is dark and full of stars. Stay in a camp tent or sleep out on the sand with warm bedding, and wake up for sunrise over the dunes.
Best time to visit Khuri
October to March is the best season for Khuri Sand Dunes. Days are pleasant for camel rides, and nights are cool to cold, perfect for campfires and sleeping out. December and January nights can be very cold on the dunes, so bring warm layers. April to June is very hot; if you travel then, choose an early-morning or late-evening safari.
The best time of day is from around 3 pm to sunset for the camel ride and light, then dinner and the night under the stars.
