Private & Non-Touristic Desert Safari Jaisalmer
Your own camel, your own guide and your own patch of the Thar, far from the crowded Sam dune points.
A desert safari without the crowds
Most desert safaris in Jaisalmer end at the same few dune points near Sam. At sunset the ridge fills with jeeps, long rows of camels and loudspeaker camps, and the desert you came to see disappears behind other tourists. A private, non-touristic desert safari in Jaisalmer with Real Desert Man takes a different route.
We leave the Sam dune rush behind and head into quiet, untouched parts of the Thar Desert, where the dunes are empty, the villages are real and the only sounds at night are the camels, the wind and the crackle of the fire. This is the desert as the people who live in it know it.
Every safari is planned by Sawai Dan, the Real Desert Man, who was born and raised in a small desert village and comes from a long line of camel men. With more than 25 years of guiding and over 21,000 guests hosted, he knows each route, village stop and sunset point personally, and chooses them for your group.
What "private" means with us
On a shared safari you join whoever booked that day. On a private safari the experience is built around you alone.
- Only your group on the camels, with your own camel guide and support crew.
- Your timings and pace. Start early, stay longer at sunset, or slow the ride for children and older guests.
- Your own dune for the evening, with dinner and chai cooked on an open fire in front of you.
- Your choice of night: a comfortable tent, or a bed with warm blankets laid out on the sand under the stars.
- A route planned for your interests, whether that is photography, village life, stargazing or simply quiet.
What "non-touristic" means with us
Non-touristic is not a label we add to a standard tour. It is the way the safari is run from the first kilometre.
- No crowded dune points and no queue of camels at sunset.
- No commercial stops, shopping detours or rushed itineraries.
- No stage lights at night, so the sky stays dark enough to see the stars and the Milky Way.
- The villages and herders you meet are part of desert life, not a staged show.
How a private desert safari day unfolds
Every group is different, but a typical overnight private safari follows the rhythm of the desert.
Afternoon: leaving Jaisalmer
Our driver picks you up from your hotel, the railway station or the bus stand. If you arrive early on an overnight train, you can rest and store your luggage at our guest house before the safari begins. On the way out of the city, many guests stop at Kuldhara, the abandoned village, before the road gives way to open desert.
Late afternoon: into the dunes by camel
You meet your camels and your guide at the edge of the dunes and ride through scrubland, past grazing herds and small settlements. Our camel men have spent their lives with these animals, and first-time riders are guided at every step. If you prefer not to ride, a walking trek with the group is just as welcome.
Sunset and evening on your own dune
You reach your dune as the light turns gold. The crew lights a fire, brews masala chai and prepares pakoras, then a simple Rajasthani dinner cooked over the flames. Guests often join in rolling rotis. After dinner there are desert songs around the fire and a sky that fills with stars once the light fades.
Night and morning
Sleep in a tent or out on the sand with blankets and bedding provided. Wake for sunrise over the dunes, chai brought to your bed, breakfast in the open and an easy ride back to the jeep for your drop in Jaisalmer.

Practical tips for your private safari
Best time to go
October to March is the best season for a desert safari in Jaisalmer. Days are pleasant and nights are cool to cold, which suits campfires and sleeping out. December and January nights can be very cold on the dunes.
What to carry
- Comfortable clothes, closed shoes and a scarf for wind and sand.
- Sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat for the afternoon ride.
- A warm jacket and something to cover your head at night in winter.
- A torch and any personal medicines.
Food
Meals are freshly cooked by the crew. Vegetarian Rajasthani food is standard, and non-vegetarian food can be arranged if you tell us in advance.
Plan it directly with Sawai Dan
Every private safari starts with a conversation. Call or WhatsApp Sawai Dan on +91-8769424955 with your dates, group size and what you want from the desert, and he will suggest the right route and duration. Advance booking is recommended in peak season, from October to March and especially around Diwali, Christmas and New Year.
